Motice and tenon/ dowelling jointing in hard to get to places
Folks,
I know this is not original and the process may even have a name.
I've borrowed heavily from Ikea. I post it here just on the odd chance it may be helpful to some.
My problem was that, in the process of doing some built-ins, I got to a point where I needed to place a couple of horizontals between a pair of immovable verticals.
I've got a Domino, and all the framing to this point is jointed using said machine. However, in order to use a mortice and tenon joint, the pieces to be jointed must be separated by the depth that the tenon protrudes into the mortice and they generally need to be square on to each other as well.
In my case I have a wardrobe on either side of the room and intend to build a mid level bench and storage area between the two, and I cannot manoeuvre them around sufficiently to position the horizontal stringers.
I've used the Domino and a forstner bit in the following pics to produce a couple of variations on a sliding tenon. No doubt you could use dowels in a similar fashion.
In the first series, using the forstner bit, I intended to plug the hole with a bit of 25mm broom stick but it was a sloppy fit, so I didn't bother. In both instances if the hole in the face doesn't show I don't really see the need to plug it.
I hope the pictures are self-explanatory. (I had hoped to arrange each series of pictures to commence on a new line but I can't figure out how to do it but it should be obvious where the second series commences)

That's lateral thinking for ya.
I have the same solution to raise a bench dog in the middle of my tail vice.
I thought it very clever at the time.
