    Default Motorhomes

Has anyone ever worked on a Motorhome project?

I have seen different Motorhome jobs and they rate rather low.
I think the reason is that usually the job is tackled by people who are used to build kitchen cabinets and do not necessarily understand the different requirement for the materials in regards to stress and weight.

In general, professional fit out places stay well clear from particleboard and MDF.

The question is what is better, to use 3 or 4 mm plywood with frame or 10 or 12mm and no need for a frame?

I am disapointed but not surprised that methods of fitout for caravans & motor homes are not cutting edge.

I would hope to see some of the more modern plastics & metal composites used.

I have just seen an aluminium plastic laminates which is gaining popularity. stronger & lighter than ply or aluminium sheet. it can be folded without bending gear. & comes in a varirty of finishes & thicknesses. cant remember the trade name. works with wood working tools.

also have recently played with foamed pvc board. it is an interesting product again stronger & lighter than ply. works with wood working gear. some grades take finishes very well.

One of my brothers good mates now still works for alan denning (ex denning coaches) who now builds top shelf motor homes & exports them. Saw some of their work a while ago very verry impressive.

HEXCELL = laminate outer skin, thin aluminium hexagonal inner
cell. they router the inner cell around the perimeter of a panel, then use sikaflex to adhere a timber jamb inside the panel.
then finish it off with a matching laminate. this allows hardware to be fixed to the superlight panel.

The boys who built greg normans new "boat" use it for
general cabinets such as overhead storage inside the high speed cats they also build besides high class monohull ships.

The material I was thinking of at last posting was "Dibond" & is easily available in brisbane probably else where. Far less expensive than some of the funky products like astro board.

    That is a big one!

I am in the process of purchasing a motorhome that is an unfinished project. The owner passed away and the son is not interested.
It's a Bedford 550 1980 36' long and most of the interior is done quite nicely, so I was trying to collect some information on materials to use, that are appropriate for this purpose.

This is a pic of the interior. the dining table converts to double bed and the bedroom is at the back
