Default Mounting a Dawn 225 vice

Ok here's one for all and sundry......

How far below the top of the work bench should the top of the steel face be...25mm, 10mm greater or lesser

This is what I would do.

Fit (sacrificial) timber faces that are higher that the cast pieces so the top of the timber is level with the top of the work bench.
Depending on your bench allow 10-25mm.

I am sure you will get a few other opinions.

I think mine is at 10mm and then a strip of timber over the metal. I have covered all the metal with a timber face.

If a set of timber chops are fitted to the inside faces, the height of the vice below the edge of the bench is not critical, unless the vice is fitted with an adjustable dog, in which case the vice must be set within the range of the dog. With the dog in its lowest position being below the bench top surface.

Some pics of my Dawn 9" set up as an End vice. I have a record 52 1/2 QR set up in on the left side in a similar fashion.

Mines about 25mm below the top of the bench and I've had no problems. Obviously wooden jaws bring it back up to the same height as the work surface.

I'll think about 10mm will do it.

Pat I love the end vice... just big, chunky and says don't mess with me.
