I would love to know how this project turned out! I have tried something similiar and found it requires heavy engineering solutions. I love the idea of secret panels and doors LOL!

I rather like JMick's suggestion of a sliding type setup. It'd involve a lot less head-aches. (Assuming familiarity with cavity door installation.)

But it'd make for rather thick walls...

I'd love to know how Seriph's groovy bookcase door was put together also. Are they real books or just the spines?

Mine is a bookcase, that used to be a doorway - the legacy of making two rooms into one - a redundant door so I filled it with that bookcase - two sided, with each side designed to accommodate DVD storage - so what you're seeing are the spines of DVDs. Sorry I wasn't clearer when I posted it.

I have thought about the rotating bookcase idea further and believe it would be relatively straightforward to design .... here are some other pics

    Hi Steve,

that is still very clever work and you've given me an idea!

Books filling an 820 x 2050 high (standard doorway size) would weigh approx 180 kg - but DVD's would be so light comparatively. I might try the secret door idea on my next project but use Dvds instead of books.

Yes you are right ! It would still need castors or some support under the opening edge.

    Rofl !! Love it!

you could also give the cat a fright if it sat in front of opening panel.

I'm musing over the idea of some sort of spring loaded mechanism to get it to pop open. You know how they pull a book forward and a panel pops somewhere - I got some really big heavy Art books that i daresay would have the weight and solidity to pull a spring catch.
