Default Not sure what to do

I have been restoring my grandmothers 1930's Art Deco hoop table that had been painted white. When I was removing the paint to my delight I found the top was parquet, I am using shellac for the base but I don't know what varnish to use on the parquet in the parquet top, I was thinking of the glass finish.

IMO the 'glass finish' looks aweful. I'd much prefer shellac and wax or a wipe on poly for durability. I've been using a home made WOP mix. 1/3 Poly, 1/3 BLO and 1/3 Turps. I add a bit more poly for a surface that may get bashed a bit.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Why not just stick with shellac that was what it most likely had on it i n the first place.

    Cheers

    Absolutely.
Shellac was/is used because, among other things, it can easily be repaired when it wears or is damaged. Also, it's easy to do, and you have some control over the lustre of the finish, from satin up to french polished.

Thanks for the advice. I know it's crazy I just don't want to let the piece down, so shellac all over it is. I have uploaded a couple of pic of it after I had removed all the paint.

Wow. Whoever painted over that needs a good kick you-know-where.

My vote is for shellac too.
It's gonna look great when you're done.

Default If I find out who painted it...

I'll "shabby chic" them them all over with some kind of large workshop implement...

That is a nice example of its era. Looks like you've done a pretty careful job of stripping the paint. I'd suggest you get a copy of 'The Polishers Handbook' by the forum sponsor. It will tell you how to get the glossy shellac finish that the table would have originally had.
