    Default OAK Keg - small

    Need some advice please

I have an 8 litre oak keg and a 4 litre oak keg that haven't been used for 20 years. The banding is still good around them but they leak like a sieve when I filled them with cheap sherry to season them again. The questions are -

Do I keep filling them with water until they swell or do I put them into as sink full of water to help them swell?

Then will it be okay if I fill them with sherry again and let that soak up for a month or two before filling them with port in one and whiskey in the other

    Thanks for any advice

Fill them to the top with water and leave over night, change the water each day ( to prevent mould forming) until they stop leaking, then rest them bung side down to drain and dry if they don't stop leaking in a few days they may need staves replaced, it would most likely be cheaper tp replace the cask.

    Thanks China

Each time I fill the smallr one with water it just leaks out. That is why I wonder if soaking them in a sink full of water will help? The bigger one is doing ok with the Sherry and the leak is slowing.

I made the mistake of letting my 20 litre oak keg dry out a few years back. I left the garden hose trickling into it for about 10 days to try and get it to take up again to no avail, it is now a barroom ornament

Check out the links below - apart from what has already been said I can't add anything but the links could help. I have one of their 2L kegs which has been/is great - I was told not to let it dry out.

Thank you all for the advice. China's method has worked and the kegs are now sealed after a couple of days. Tomorrow I will drain them again and fill them with sheryr. The alcohol should stop any mould forming inside. I have been changing the water twice a day. It wasn't until this afternoon that the final leak (drip) stopped and you can see where the wide cracks have sealed as the water has turned the joins a darker colour. All good and thenks again.
