Oak Stand
Hi All,
For the past month I’ve been working on a non-turning project. I was asked to make a “Greeters Stand” for the church I go to. Used Red Oak plywood and Red Oak lumber for the stand. It was a good experience to do this project, but it’s definitely not as much fun as turning, you actually have to measure and cut stuff correctly for it to come out right!
I drew up the plan for it using Google’s Sketch-Up. Real neat, easy to use,
free CAD program. If you’ve never used it before, I urge you to try it out...it’s tailor made for woodworking projects. With a bit of experience it might even be of use in planning out a turning project.
Comments & positive criticism welcome!
(Awww...what-the-hell, if you want to leave a negative comment go ahead, this ain't the "Jerry Springer Show" so I won't beat you up...just ignore you!!!!)
Cheers,
EdCheers,
Ed

Fine looking stand Ed. I also do flat work but much prefer turning. During the past six months I have made quite a few urns from red oak for people who want to plan ahead because they have seen the price of funeral home urns. Your mix of plywood and solid seems to work very well for that job.

Hi Oldipred...
Your turned urns sound interesting, any chance you might post a few pics?
The carcass, shelves, and top are ply, with the trim being solid oak. Won't be much movement from the ply.

Nice work Ed but I would have though that you, of all people, would have worked a turned column in there somewhere ... wecome to the straight side!

Thanks Fletty and G'day...
It occured to me to do that, but they wanted to keep the design simple....hmmmm, maybe a nice, shallow, open bowl for the top might be in order.

G'day Block...
Thanks for the kind comment. It's appreciated.
Pastor is happy with it (since I didn't charge a lot for labor!!!), will see if other members like it at tomorrow's church service!

Sorry Ed, my wording was not very good. The urns are flat work. They pay for the woodwork hobby so I can enjoy turning when the oppurtunity presents itself.

Absolutly no need for apology, it was an assumption on my part!!!
We all have our "bread & butter" items that generate the $$$$ for the things that are enjoyable. Back when I was turning full time, selling to shops and doing about 10 shows a year, my prime production item was a turned jar lid for Ball and Mason jars...
made and sold thousands of 'em
