    Default Oak Wardrobe

    Guys,

I have an oak wardrobe which is a nice piece. as a result of getting built in robes its use has been taken away as a wardrobe. Since it is a nice piece i thought i could still put it to use, keeping it for sheets/linen etc that is if i was able to put in some shelving.
It is a double door wardrobe. So, i figure about 3-4 shelves per side would do it.
My question is - how difficult is this? Cost wise would it be easy to get some lengths of oak to cut up ?
Lets assume for now that i will be attempting this. I have some experience working with timber and am reasonably well tooled up but have not really worked with furniture much.

    Any help appreciated,
    Peter.

Are we talking Oak like English, French, white, Red or eucalyptus like Tasmanian oak? That will impact on cost and availability.

Hi Peter. You could probably convert it quite simply.

My guess is that the sides are timber frames with plywood panels.
If it has solid oak sides it would be even easier.

My first thought would be to fix 40mm x 20mm boards to the sides of the wardrobe. These are to support the shelves.

You can space them to suite but at least 30cm between shelves would suite a linen cupboard.

Solid timber - Tassie oak - would be good for the shelves.

    How wide is the wardrobe?
Anything over 1m and you will need to strengthen the shelves or add a vertical divider.

What did you have in mind?
