    Default Occasional or Side Table

This is my latest project using the same leg design as another table I made.

It is entirely from Camphor Laurel and has what has been described as "Side Table with oriental Influence".

The Jacaranda bowl on the little table is some work from my mate, Ray.

The scallop pattern on the edge of the top took some setting out and was done with a round back file.

I am going a little smaller with the next project, a jewelry box from silky oak with rose wood edging.

The top is about my 3rd attempt at the lathe. I have an excellent tutor, a perfectionist, but a very good Woodie. He makes and sells Jewelry boxes at $350 to $400 with ease.

Yes, the sanding is arduous but the end result is worth it, I think.

    Thanks

PS, As Ben Franklin once said: I have not made 10,000 mistakes, I have just found 10,000 methods that do not work.

I went to a local Antique store, after asking the Woodies for leg patterns, and found some shapes of various oriental description.

I copied the ones I used on this table, onto a bit of cardboard and took it home to set it out as a template.

There are 5 22mm holes bored, with a sharp Forstner bit, where the returns are placed in the leg, and the shape was cut out using a 1/4 blade on my band saw.

Rounding over of the edges a is left until last, or until you are satisfied that the holes and shape is symmetric.

Sanding was carried out using a 20mm round, long shanked, barrel sander ($28.00 set of 4 Carbatech)

Hand sanding was required to finish the legs.

NOTE: Because of the very small and very breakable shank in the small barrel sanders I had a bearing (From a router) and a pin incorporated in the bearing. This I set up on the drill press table and the concept is excellent. The sander center bolt has a small countersink drilled (by lathe) in the center of each one.

After I established the first template, I copied it and took it to Office Works and they copied the original onto cardboard in two 15% - 25% - and 25% + the original...Cost $1.80 all up. You can do the same thing on your computer printer by ut mine is not working.

Beware: The percentages are not really accurate and are only close to the percentages suggested as the computer compensates for size.

You need to leave 10mm for dovetail join where legs attach to table stem.

    This is the original template.
