Enjoy your trip, this has to be one of the best rides/drives in the world.
Ive done it heaps of times and each time it fill me me with awe.
You wont be dissapointed.

Sure will be enjoyable......BLOODY COLD, but as long as the heater keeps up in the car, should be OK....I rode it about 25yrs ago on a motorbike and it was awesome then, what I can remember......thats why I don't need to know where the previous listed "establishments" are....

A lot changes in 25 years.
Make sure you have lots of film/megs/batteries in ya camera as every corner is a photo waiting to happen.

I rode it West to East(ish) about 12 years ago & loved every bit of it. Have never driven it, but no matter how good it is by car, I imagine it would be a bit of a let down after riding it. Hard to believe they had bikes in mind when they built that road all those years ago, but I am sure they did

A few words of warning from he who travelled it once a month for two years:
1. Watch out for bends, I've seen a lot of cars go off the road because of the Oohs and Aahs.
2. Watch out for Japanese tourists who have a nasty habit of stopping on the road anytime they see a scenic shot, I mean on the road, not off to the side, usually in the middle of a blind corner.
3. Don't have lunch at Lorne unless you have a water cooled VISA card, I got done for $7.00 for a bloody pastie once, and it wasn't that good.
Apart from that it is a nice drive.

We did it last year. I'd have to say that it's one of the few places that actually lives up to the tourism hype.

I particularly liked Apollo Bay.

Lorne is tacky unless you like ostentatious wealth. Keep moving. Wye River pub is obligatory, especially on a Winter evening. Fish and chips in Apollo Bay, but munch them overlooking the harbour - go to the fish co-op while you're at at. Winter is a great time on GOR, I'd be down at the Elliot River National Park south of Apollo Bay to soak up the spartan wintry grandeur of it all. My own haunt is the area around Grey River, between Kennet River and Apollo Bay. There's a cave in cliffs under Cape Patton but you have to walk around the beach from Grey River, plenty of southern ocean energy coming in there too. Woodies hang out back of Apollo Bay.

Cant help with the itinery as the last time I was there was in 1978 or so and tellin you the good places Id been to would be kinda supervalitive eh?... Anyway have a great trip!!

It was covered over with rocks and trees last year when I drove from west to east. That was the day they also had snow in Victoria end of January!

The state couldn't afford to shut it with all the terrorists handing over money along the way, a rockfall is a minor issue, only a few hours to clear.
That would be well catered for given the potential for rockfalls along the way.
Most issues are with people rubbernecking and missing corners, despite all the warning signs.

A good tip for the GOR JAD is to listen for the weather forecast and try and get a tail wind day to travel on. Could reduce your fuel costs by upto 50%
