Oil over Sikkens on WRC cladding?
Hi there,
I'm new to the forum and would love some advice. We've recently moved (relocated) a house to Robertson in NSW. It's clad in rough sawn western red cedar. I believe the timber was treated with a sikkens product (fairly dark shade) some time ago. For various reasons, we've had to reclad a significant proportion of the house with new wrc (light colour) cladding. The sikkens has worn pretty badly in some places and is flaking up like old paint and has completely gone in other places (leaving the timber almost black). This has happened mostly on the paneled french windows & doors. Do we need to remove all traces of the old product (will be quite difficult) before applying the new?
Alternatively, someone has suggested that instead of mucking around and repainting the sikkens (trying to match the colour of the old and new), we just use an timber oil for the whole house and try and match the stain where possible. I was wondering if an oil would penetrate the Sikkens where it was still in pretty good condition?
Many thanks,
Guy.

Guy, I'm no expert, but I used Sikkens Cetol HLS, (Ebony tint), on a couple of things lately and if it's in good condition and was originally well soaked in, there's no way oil will penetrate properly. The Sikkens does a pretty good job of sealing. It might depend on how many coats of Sikkens were originally applied, though, but be wary. It's a base stain and finishing coat in one.

Many thanks Hermit. I'm leaning towards re-coating with Sikkens. It's pretty expensive stuff for large areas!

From what I've heard, if it's flaking, it needs to be removed, as in sanded or possibly pressure cleaned back till you have a good clean surface
