What Oil for a Thicknesser gearbox?
G'day, I was hoping someone could tell me what oil to put in the gearbox of my Jet 15" thicknesser. I bought it 2nd hand many years ago, and thought it was time for an oil change. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers Greg

I have been putting 80W/90 Gear Oil (Valvoline) in my Carbatec 15" thicknesser with no issues so far.
I drained mine after a few hours work and replaced it with this, pretty sure its the recommended grade of oil.
It's actually automotive gearbox oil but considering its the right grade I just used it.

If your Jet is similar to my Carbatec CTJ-381, there are two plugs on the gearbox case.
The bottom one is to drain and the top one is a fill plug. The manual i downloaded recommends to fill to just below the level of the fill plug.
So by default you really cant overfill as it would flow out of the fill hole.
Steven.

oil
G'day Steven, thanks for your help. I always knew where the drain hole was, but wasn't aware of the fill hole. I've just gone out to the shed and found it. I was thinking I was going to have to turn the thicknesser upside down to fill the gearbox, so you have saved me from a lot of mucking about. I guess I just need to use a bit of hose and a funnell and away I go. Cheers Greg

+1 for the Valvoline.
Used that in the power feed on the spindle moulder at work last year after one of the gaskets sprung a leak.
For what it's worth, I don't even know if you need to bother changing the oil. The oil leaking from the power feed was totally clear and this was after 40+ years in an industrial setting without an oil change.
