I have been given the opportunity to obtain a piece of oregon timber which is about 30cm X 40cm X 240cm. This timber has been removed from the support structure of the Gables Building at Wynns Winery, Coonawarra. This building is National Trust protected and is one of the most well known and iconic winery buildings in Australia. The timber was removed as a result of renovations to the structure necesary due to water and termite damage. This piece is visually undamaged. It was a ceiling bearing beam in the underground barrel cellar. Many years ago full barrels were stored on the floor supported by these bearers in the ground floor section, including huge oval ones big enough to stand up inside.

I am looking for suggestions to make use of this timber, as being oregon, the uses are limited to a degree. I have little experience with woodworking oregon except structural, out of the weather uses. Any suggestions would be welcome, especially as this timber has historical significance.

This timber is free and I am waiting to see if anyone else at work wants any as there are about 6 pieces to be thrown out if no one wants them. Already 1 other has shown interest. I have selected the largest good piece. There is another longer bit that has water and termite damage but looks as if it has about half of its thickness undamaged for most of its length. I would guess there is little likelyhood that anyone would be interested in this one.

One possible use I would welcome comment on is for home made casement windows as replacements for our old (50 + year) tas oak sash windows which I don't like due to being painted and the design of sash windows is limited re double glazing and insect/draft protection.
