    Default Outdoor seat

    All,
I'm looking for some advice on finishing an outdoor project.

My wife asked me to build a seat into our new pool area that will double as storage, with a flip top lid.

I have completed the box, and am getting around to finishing it with the hinged lid.

The design will call for the lid to be made out of hardwood decking boards with 5mm gaps between each one.
The box top is 1800 x 500 and the will have 2 lids 900x500

What I am trying to figure out is how to create the lid, connect all the boards together, keep the weight down and ensure the lid doesn't warp.

I was thinking of running 3 boards underneath at the ends of each lid + in the middle.

How do I prevent the top of the lid twisting and not sitting flat on top of the box??

    Thanks
    Geoff

gday gsouth diagonals will certainly reduce racking in the major plane of the seat, however your bigger concern is warping or twisting of the seat itself which is a good point because you are putting this seat in a pool area which will contribute to moisture uptake in the timber. so i think structurally your design is fine with or without bracing, but you need to seal the wood, and especially the end-grains, to maintain 'dimensional stability'. what type of hardwood are you using? regards brynk

Have a look at this site. http://www.woodworld.com.au/projectsdetails.htm?id=29
It shows some of their projects. No detailed descriptions but I think you will get the idea from the photos.

This is the one I like for a pool seat, borrowing the marine theme.
    Quote from Woodworld;
    "Boarding Platform for Boat
We were fortunately presented with the old boarding platform which provided us with a jig - the old platform was placed on custom wood and angle irons were screwed into place for later use.
We then epoxy laminated teak strips. The completed solid platform was then drum-sanded and trimmed to size using a jig saw and belt sander. We divided the platform into 4, being sure to mark where the platform was attached to the yachts stainless assembly bracket, and a custom wood template was made. The slots were routed and the top corners of the grooves rolled into pencil rounds using a trimmer.

There are many ways to build such platforms - many factors contribute to the methodology chosen. The method above can be adapted to all manner of other projects where a slotted finish is required."
