This may be because of the economic situation in the states. If your business is battling it is more difficult to take the high ground. At the time of writing 1 US$ costs just under 92c.
I think the States have a lot more grief in store yet and I would expect their exports to open up and become more competitive, particularly in the postage department.
Low weight, high value items are always the most attractive to purchase overseas.

Bought a large order of Whiteside router bits at the ned of last year from Routerbits.com. The service was excellent and the delivery was at the door in around 10 days. I have since tried to place another order on 2 separate occasions and have been bitterly disappointed. On the second order, I did not hear from them for 6 weeks and I emailed them. The response was very rude, stating that they had tried to contact me on three separate occasions as the VISA card was declined. Will not be doing any more business there. It is a shame as their postage was awesome.
I have since found another supplier, Whiteside Router Bits: An American made Carbide Router Bit and I placed an order with them yesterday morning. I received a follow up email today telling me that it had been shipped this morning. They even use Paypal and their postage rates are nearly as excellent as the other mob. Time will tell how successful the latest purchase goes.
Have also bought from Lee Valley and Woodpeckers as well. Woodpeckers postage rates has improved recently and the value will change if you start you cart with the lightest items first. In saying that, after seeing the actual cost on the picking slip I was still ripped there a bit. I probably should have queried it. None the less, very happy with the price and items at the end of the day.
