Default Paint Spraying - Small compressor - what gun?

    Hi all

    First off, sorry if this is the wrong section;

Im currently building a Mechmate CNC router, And I dont want to spray can it. I only have a small compressor as I dont use it all that often (Bit of Air blowing and pumping tyres up etc)

The stats that I can see on it are:

    24L Tank
    Free Air flow - 117 L/pm

I dont need to paint in lightning speed, but I dont want to buy a new compressor to just spray this and not have a need for such a big compressor again. Is it possible with an external water trap and the right gun to get some painting out of this? I dont mind having to wait for it to build up pressure after a small area.

If so, what type of gun should I be looking at to buy?

    John

Hi.your compressor will run a spray gun for a very short amount of time before it starts and then will strugle to keep up the flow and pressure required if you are painting anything greater say than a1m2 area without stopping. If you are painting small parts or panels etc that setup will be ok and cheap sprayguns are not hard to come by,i have a pair of star s770 guns that work fine and cost about $90 each or so.use a 10mm bore airline and you will find it works like a pro.cheers danny

There are cheap spray guns in Bunnings that would be okay for the work you have in mind. If you are not in a rush, a small compressor will do the job too, just takes a little longer to wait for the pressure to build up each time.
    Reality is no background music.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies, I had a look at bunnings and the tool shop today at spray guns. What do you think is better for general purpose spraying? Gravity feed or suction?

There were a few decent looking guns with built in pressure reg's , Prob go back on Saturday and pick one up

what type of paint are you going to use?

we use a two part expoxy metal paint at work which can be sprayed when thinned with epoxy thinners

I lean toward gravity feed, they always seem to keep up a continuous supply of material/paint plus you can usually work with a small quantity of paint from the gravity feed whereas with the other kind you need to keep the paint above the bottom of the suction tube in the pot.

I'd recommend getting a HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) type gravity gun.

    Hi guerd87,

I'm not any sort of expert, but I suggest looking at HVLP spray guns.
I bought a standard gun with my compressor, and only used it a couple of times because the overspray went everywhere.
Then I picked up a cheap HVLP set from SuperCheapAuto, and have used it a few times. Big difference! Almost no overspray.

sure did - well maybe their other spammy post, but certainly hit that on at least one...

I really just wanted to post the notice here so others don't also fall into the trap of replying valuable info for a thread so out of date....
