    Talking Old Palings

I like to use old palings for picture frames, shoe boxes and my latest construction, a bench seat with a lid to a storage space for outside in the garden.
I have noticed that no matter how old the palings they still shrink once you take the surface off them via a thicknesser. I have left the cleaned palings for a week or more before use and there is still some shrinkage.
I can hear you all shudder at the thought of sending palings through the thicknesser, but a little bit at a time does not seem to do any damage. In fact, I like to leave the 'grey' in the surface for effect, and just take the splinters off, and, of course, I take meticulous care with nail removal. The ones in the wood, not my own.
Natural decking oil is easy to use on the finished woodwork and brings out the colours well, if a little dark.
Areas to take glue should be skinned or the soft outside wood will just flake away.

    Peter,

I too have a bit of a paling collection , what's left of them have been following me around for a few years now, I have denailed them, cleaned them with a pressure blaster, (creating some furry bits on the way) and used to sand them before thicknessing one side only.

Now I use the drum sander and give both sides a light sand, but still thickness them on one side.

I have a lifetime's supply for picture frames, but a couple of boxes for storing BBQ heat beads (for my ever-so Butch Webber Kettle) and kindling (for the fireplace that we can never use unless all the windows are open because it's never cold enough) will probably just about deplete remaining stock!

    Cheers,

    P

Those on this thread could easily become a splinter group.

This is so bad I think we should force everyone who has responded to walk the plank.

    Talking Old Palings

Trust me to trust you. I should have known that my old palings would be attacked by borers.
Splinter groups, walk the plank, indeed!!!
