Thread: pallet challenge??

pallet challenge??
now the box callenge is all but over is anyone interested in a wider challenge.
what i am considering is a pallt chalenge as talked about in an erlier thread.
entrats would have to get there hands on a forklift pallet. any construction any timber it dont matter so long as its a standard size pallet. (not the 3m square ones you get hay on.)
entrants can make anything they want. so long as all the timber included comes from the pallet anything else you want to add is fine. any construction and style you like.
well are you interested?
we would also need someone or someones to donate prizes no matter how small. after supplying prizes fot all the other challenges i am no longer in a position to do so.

I am interested at this stage but it will depend on timings and work... have a big event coming up which will be keeping me busy til the start of Nov.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

I'll be your Moderator for this Challenge, if you like. May I also suggest that if people enter, they submit their entries regardless of how far they have progressed, even a WIP photo or two is more interesting than less entrants. - Just a suggestion.
cheers

I'm game to try anything, although my preference as a hobbyist is for small and nice v bulk crap timber.

F&E I'm sure you wouldn't have to use the whole pallet if you only want to make something petit.

Let's make it 12 months. Seriously I do have a lot of the real projects to do. Have fun without me.

The operative word in my sentence wasn't "small', it was (nice v crap) "timber".
As we all know, nice timber tends to be expensive, therefore small instead of bulk is most people's choice.
Also, if the species is not a constraint, the quantity becomes the determining factor. It is conceivable, albeit unlikely, that somebody could find (on e-bay?) a small piece of rare timber that happened to be part of a reject plank used to make a pallet in some obscure part of the world. IMHO "a pallet" denies the spirit of these challenges, which are based on the concept of making the most of something specific and the same for everybody. This is not to say that it would not be worthwhile and fun, only that it is not another step on the road we have taken so far.

using a pallet is just a way of being able to make something bigger than a box or goblet. postage restricts the size of the raw material.
a the timber in a chep pallet be it ironbark, spoty gum or any other hard wood is mutch nicer that a lump of common camphor. (not tryting to afend any one). and having loseguide lines as to what can be made alows a greater portion of the forums to get involved.
thats just my opinion any how.
there is also no reason that people from other countries cant join so long as they can find them selves a pallet.

I beg to differ, even when the type of timber and size is set, there is still a huge difference in the look of the wood, just take the difference in timber in the box challenge.
Nice timber is just that, nice, but it is not everything otherwise we would all just dress up some nice timber and show off our planks oooo!, ahhhh!, woooow! Even when you buy expensive timber you might not get any wonderful figure that matches what you find in a piece of reject builders waste. It is a worthwhile trip, and an oft run competition that constrains roughly the quantity and price of the starting material and requires the woodworker to really think carefully about how to transform this mundane object into a thing of beauty. Sure, someone may luck onto a speccy piece of wood in the pallet, but I doubt that it would mean much in the judging. What would be more important is the design and sympathetic use of the wood, I mean in terms of grain matching etc...
Cheers

I dont want rain on your parade Weisy boy. But Chep pallets "Always remain the property of Chep", who evers name they are in id only renting them. So if you use chep pallets
1) some por bar steward will be paying the rent for a very long time or paying chep compensation.
2) Destruction of someone else's property is against the law.
Yours Truly
One poor bar steward who is paying Chep for more pallets than he actually hasCheers,

At the last few Wood Shows in Melbourne there were some very interesting articles displayed made from pallet/crate timber. You could perhaps look at the rules for that competition to get some ideas for this challenge.
Here is a link to another competition
