Pallets sometimes yield good wood
I answered a newspaper ad that someone ran who was "giving away wood pallets that are used in shipping." So I went and checked them out. I grabbed a couple and scraped them to see what kind of wood they were. Of the ones I grabbed a couple were pine, but most were oak and hard maple and they were between 5/4 and 6/4. Granted one is limited by the length as a standard pallet is 4'X4', but run them throught the old planer a few times and I have quite an addition to my hardwood stockpile. Not a bad deal I thought - If it's free, it's for me!!

It's shorthand for 1/4" increments. Ivan is right, 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" respectively.
(30mm and 37mm) Since it's free, does size really matter?
I was given some "pallett" wood by a friend who had a machine delivered on it. It has made 10 100mm workshop storage boxes ranging in size from 600mm to 200mm, I'm just finishing them up now.
Ya gotta luv free stuff - nice haul!

There is a competion held here where by you get an old crate and make something from it, its called Create from a Crate.
They show the end product at the wood shows, the stuff they turn out is breath taking.
Found it, here is a link.

Oz,
Thanks for that link. The stuff that people make out of recycled material is amazing.

My last job was as a storeman in a lagre department store, and I saw countless pallets. If i remember rightly there was a fair number of redgum pallets too... well, they looked like redgum to me.

Pallets
Yep a few years ago I picked up a pallet which turned out to rose gum. it made a very nice coffee table I only needed to buy a bit of bluegum for the legs. Found a few oak ones as well just not in the best condition. I still keep an eye out from time to time hoping for a good find.
Dave,
hug the tree before you start the chainsaw.
