I doubt they could find another location in the city, so yes it is sad.

Well I ended up with an exciting stash. A box of disposable P2 dust masks and an allen key set. I umm'ed and ahh'ed over a 8" Abbot and Ashby industrial bench grinder that was $189 less 30% (~$130), same one listed at Hare and Forbes for $210. Decided it would be too heavy to drag home on the train and somebody else bought it before I left. i think I regret not buying it, though when I mentioned it to LOML she indicated that I took the wise course of action

    cheers,

    Default Sunlite

There are two other hardware stores in the CBD - Sunlite Hardware, one on York Street and the other one on Pitt Street near Martin Place. The service there is excellent. You should give them a shot.

Mention of Nock and Kirby's brought back memories. Who remembers Joe the Gadget Man on TV on Sat mornings?

And yes, I have a pair of Paulcall clamps, bought over 40 years ago, still going strong with weekend usage.

I was walking by this afternoon and saw the sign.

I asked the question how much time before they close. About 2 - 3 weeks. I saw some good deals and thought I should take this and take that. The problem was I only had one back pack and that was already full with paperwork. My time was short as I was heading towards a meeting. So I picked up some the bolts.

I know I want to go back and get some more items but the timing is horrible. I guess if you are in the city and you want to take a look might be worth a look. You just never know.

I believe that they have to be out by the 18th November. The boss would be happy to relocate, but as Wongo said, they can't seem to find a suitable site in the City - he also said that one of the young chaps might take to the Internet selling stuff - don't know if he's looking at EBay or direct sales from his own site.

Most of the power tools have gone, but there is a fair selection of hand tools still there, plus boxes of fasteners - wood screws, regular nuts & bolts, masonry anchors - stuff....Quite a lot of Carb-i-tool router bits too. A lot of safety gear has been snapped up by the tradies but there is still some stock.

The gardening, plumbing & paint sections are still fairly full of stock - probably because they are furthest from the door

Hard to forget it Uncle was the fellow who owned the Engravers stand under the escalators/stars in NK's then BBC till they closed their doors. He moved into the Strand Arcade I think it was across the road till he retired. I always stirred him saying he was Joe's look a like or twin bother.

PS Paul's also had a store on Canturbury Rd Bankstown some where in the late 70's early 80's

And immediately after Joe was on, I seem to recall it was Championship Wrestling, hosted by the famous Ron Casey, and featuring the beautiful Garibaldi brothers and a bloke named Gorgeous George.

Didn't Ron get in to a fist fight with Normie Rowe on TV years later? That was the last I ever saw of him.

The memory is fading. Those were the good old days

    Default Old Pauls

I remember the old Pauls' stores well. I got my first ever job there after leaving school & during uni vacations. They had 3 stores in those days. In the QVB, Pitt Street and Bankstown which I think was their warehouse and also retail outlet.

There was never any problem in getting served in those days because there were heaps of shop assistants (me included) behind counters serving customers. Their biggest opposition was Nock & Kirby's (remember Handy Andy and Joe the Gadget man on Channel 9 on Saturday mornings?)

Nock's were much bigger, they had 4 storeys as opposed to Pauls' one but Nock's couldn't hold a candle to them as far as customer service went. Funny enough, a few years later my brother went to work for Nock's and was the manager of the ground floor section but left after a couple of years after they were taken over by BBC (later Hardwarehouse and later still, Bunnings).

The present Paul's store is about 5% of the floor space of the old QVB store. Am sorry to see them go. Often drop in when I'm in town. Unfortunately, I don't think there's another hardware store in the city, is there?

    Cheers

If memory serves me correctly, I think one of the announcers on WCW was a chubby little American chap called Sam Menaker.

This past week I have been able to pick up a few things. As only a few things can be picked up by me, a little hard to carry things.

Well I was able to go during my lunch hour on the way back from a meeting and in the afternoon. It was the afternoon that I met up with a fellow whom was the owner of the store. I must say that he is a real gentleman of a human being.

For some reason I seem to recall him from somewhere. We got to talking about Wood working shows and trade shows and I mention this site. He knew about this site.

I was surpose to get the web address but silly me seems to have misplaced it or forgotten to pick up.
