    Default Pergola question

    Sorry guys,
I've been away for a looong time.
Been in the new house for a couple of years now. The missus came to me last week and said "darling, we need a pergola before the hot weather really hits" (Geelong, Vic).
    And I said aaah cr*p !!
I didn't get permits for the few pergs on our previous house but I'll do the right thing now.
Can anyone tell me... do I need a professionally done plan to take to the council or can I sketch one myself.
Last house had timber fascia which made it easy for me to attach to the pergola. This one is colourbond.. Do I attach a length of timber to the brickwork and work from that?
Or are there better ways? No doubt I'll be asking for more help soon.

    Ta,

    AL

Ring your local council and ask - you need not give your address.

In my area if a pergola is less than 20 square metres and no higher than 3 metres, no permit is needed or at least was not 12 months ago.

    Hope that helps

As long as your drawings call up all the information the council/building surveyor wants it doesnt matter if you sketched them on the kitchen table or was over charged by an Architect !!! The trade off is hopefully a professional will get it right the first time where you may have to re-submit your plans once or twice.

Things like if you're attaching the pergola to the house and the value of the works($5000 maybe) also affect needing a permit or not.

Chesand's right, call and find out without telling them where you live !

As Chesand said "Ring your local council and just ask the question" I have always drawn up plans for projects that I have done and never had any issues. As long as you have all the information on the plan that they require.

    Thanks guys,
I'll call and have a chat with them. Still not sure on size yet. Up to the missus.
It'll have a roof, I know that much. Which will mean guttering and a water tank I dare say.
