    Default Levelling railway sleepers

I am making myself a workbench. I have a couple of new unused sleepers that are about 230x110. I have a 6"jointed and a 12" thicknesser. My table saw is also 12".

The problem is I don't want to break up the slabs, and I am unsure about handplanning the top with a number 4 handplane.

J live in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, are there any commercial operators that could dress the wood for me?

    Thanks in advance
    Tony

You can use the thicknesser. Build a sled from thick MDF that the sleepers can sit in; the thicknesser will generate a surface parallel to the sled base. There are several designs available online, the key is to make it as rigid as humanly possible.

That is a good idea, the sleepers weigh at least 80kg though. I am thinking of a couple of rails either side of the sleeper, a 30mm thick piece of msg, mount the router on the msg and slide along the rails. I have an older D handle makita that may be suited to the job. What do you think

    It can work.

This is how I quickly level large slabs. Gotta make sure that you use good straight edges and level them correctly.

You also need to be able to trust your router. Any creep in the depth setting or, worse, the collet and it can quickly escalate into a headache. DAMHIKT.

If you have a flat surface that the sleeper can sit on, you can build a router stool, The stool can be moved up and down while the router can move from one side of the stool to the other. It's a pretty simple jig.

When it doesn't fit my machines , or they are not plugged in yet , I shape up slabs with a hand held electric planer . Here is a log I split then dressed up with one . I got it flat on top then sawed the sides , flipped it and did the under side . I will be finishing it off with hand tools .
