Default Perth: Someone to service my thicknesser and possibly Planer

    Hi

I am based in Perth and wondering if anyone knows someone who could service my 1990 15" Thicknesser which has a helical (spiral) head.

I have wound it up as high as it goes and can see one of the bits is broken in half hence why I am getting big slashes in my wood.

I wouldn't even know where to start on how to repair it, as I cannot see a way of getting the helical (spiral) head out to service it.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Aron

With out knowing what machine you have you should not have reason to take the head out at all. All you need to do is remove the damaged cutter and replace it with a new one. Each cutter is held in with countersunk screw with a multi splined hole that requires a "Alan" type key. Each cutter has four sharpened edges so when the machine appears not to be cutting effectively its just a matter of un-screwing the screw sufficiently to turn the cutter to the next sharp edge.

    No users manual?
surely this could be something that can be searched up and downloaded?
If the sellers and distributors of these machines were smart, they would make a short video of how to do these basic maintenance tasks and make it easy to find on YouTube.
it really annoys me how they can sell these machines for such a ridiculous amount and then not provide basic information about how to maintain and tune them.

The machine is 31 years old and I discovered sold by Ron Mack Machinery in Osborne Park.

They are still there so i phoned them and he said he can provide a manual if i provide a model number.

Unfortunately I have looked everywhere on the machine and besides it saying Ron Mack Machinery and motor specs there is nothing to indicate model or anything.

I found a guy through timbecon and he is willing to come out on Monday to have a look for me which is very nice of him.

    Cheers

These sorts of machines have cutters that can often be rotated, so if the edge of one of your cutters is damaged (and it isn't totally broken), it may just be a case of rotating the cutter. If you haven't done this before, and have used the machine a fair bit, I'd be tempted to rotate them all.

If it's totally broken, reach out to Steve here: SJE-Tool

Take a photo/remove one of your other cutters and take some careful measurements with a set of calipers.

With those and a quick chat, I am confident you will be able to find spare cutters for your machine. Even if you can rotate the existing set, having some spares on hand is never a bad idea.
