Another pice by my Great, Great, Great Grandfather
Today I visited the National Gallery of Victoria Ian Potter Centre,I went specifically to view a newly acquired piece. It is a sewing box circa 1847 made from Blackwood by my Great, Great Great Grandfather.
Apart from the beauty of the piece and the workmanship I was drawn to the hinges, the brass hinges are held in with steel screws and the slots are not aligned. I was surprised because of the debate that some times rages about how to be pure, brass screws must be used and all the slots aligned in the same plane.
My G, G, G grandfather made half the furniture that is in Government House Victoria, obviously he was a knowledgeable trades man and made quality items, so I suppose next time I look at a box I will be looking for steel screws and non aligned slots to see if the piece is true to tradition.
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I´m not so sure about the universe.

It's hard to accept that a craftsman like your relative made that box so well and used steel screws,it's more like someone pulled it apart to clean the hinges and lost the original ones putting steel ones in and not lining up the slots. A tradesman would allways line up the slots. Its lucky phillips were not used

Nope if you look at the box in real life the screws are the originals, go and have a look it is on Level Two in Gallery 6 of the NGV Ian Potter Centre, while your are there in the same room are some nice paintings by Tom Roberts and Fred McCibbin and I think there are also some Streeton's on show also.

What makes you say ,"the screws are original"? As a fine furniture maker myself, I cannot imagine a bloke with Pop's talent doing such a thing. Would it be fair to say that at some time the brasswork and for that matter, the finish, have been cleaned? I'd back Pop any day.
