Picture Framing
Hi all,
I want to frame a couple of Tai-Chi posters.
Measuring 540 high x 760 wide.
I'd like to have that coloured cardboard around the poster (maybe 30 mils).
I'd also like to make the frames to match.
Does anyone know of a standard size for the coloured cardboard or if there is a standard size/thickness for the wood frame.
I'm hoping there is a standard. For instance maybe: No less than 5% for the coloured cardboard frame.
And:
No less thatn 10% for the wood frame.
I know some coloured cardboard absolutely swollow the picture and some frames are very wide and very detailed.
Because of the sheer size of the poster, I plan to make as thin a wooden frame as possible to keep the weight down.
But want it to be in proportion to the size of the poster and coloured cardboard.

Barry,
In my (limited) experience there's no such thing as a 'standard' picture frame. The most commonly used moulding is about 4cm wide by 2cm thick (1 1/2" x 3/4"). Many framers vary the width to suit the picture - my mentor showed me a gilded frame yesterday which was nearly 8cm wide.
The common measurement for the mat (your piece of coloured cardboard) is about 6cm wide on the sides and top, and 7cm on the bottom - this looks better for some artistic reason...
Try <www.fixaframe.com.au> and poke around a bit, or also try <www.clubframeco.com>
Hope this helps

Hi all,
Thanks for the precise number there Johnno. You're a champion.
Thanks for the reference. I did go down and speak to John. Super nice guy. Who really helped with all the specifics regarding picture framming and all the aspects there of.
Eventhough I have my own wood for frames, all the bits and pieces to finish properly were far out of my price range.
Without a doubt picture framing is an art, and a profession, with expenses.
Oh well, back to the drawing board.
