Plans are for Girls!!
Well folks, a before and after shot of the latest project.
SWMBO wanted to tidy up the end of the entry hall, so I figured it was a good chance to spend some quality shed time.
My usual approach is to buy some timber, Tassie Oak in this case, and start cutting, with a general concept in mind, and just let the thing flow.
Of course it had to fit the end of the hallway so there were a couple of restraints, but generally it just developed as I went. The hall was 1070 mm wide so I figured that 1000 mm was a nice tidy measurement for the width.
Somewhere along the way it was decided that a 75x 18 mm bull-nose kick board would be nice, and since I was producing a few lengths of double bead moulding for the doors, it would be nice to trim the top and the shelf with the stuff.
All went well, generally, and the oiling was done, the ply backing painted and fitted, and the moment came to move it up to the house.
It was as we manoeuvered it into the mouth of the 4 metre hallway that I broke into a cold sweat.
The hallway was still 1070 wide and the basic cabinet was still 1000mm wide....BUT... the hallway skirting was 12 mm on each side and the kick board I had fitted to the cabinet was 19mm on each side ..so do the math. 1070 less 62mm = 1008, less the original 1000 mm = 8 mm.
Yes folks just a lousy 8 mm to spare!!
Well we got it there, as the picture proves, even had to remove the door knob to get it past, and it's a tight enough fit to be a built in.
Maybe next time maybe I won't be so lucky but that will mean making a plan ... Nah, bugger it ..she'll be right

Looks there were plenty of room. Look at the gap along the sides.

Plans? We don't need no stinkin' plans!
DISCLAIMER: That line was taken from an old American movie and may make no sense to my new friends down under.

Good job, looks to be of great quality.
On the top section, are those four squares small drawers?I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Matrix,
No, only the bottom two, with the brass knobs, are small drawers.
I have made a matching set of fronts for the top two, and one option was to hinge them from the top so that gravity would keep them shut because they were too high for drawers. but in the end SWMBO vetoed the idea in favour of leaving them open.
Thanks for the compliment, Djstimber, but I have to defer to SWMBO, as the colour was her idea. Left to me I probably would have just oiled the backing, but I think she was right.

That's a very nice bit of craftsmanship, you should be proud of it and show it off as guests arrive. I think that's worthy of a greenie!..

Nice work Ian. Like the blue backing.
Reminds of the time I built a kitchen 'island'. Measured the door widths, etc, forgot about the kick board, and had to take the front door off the hinges to get it through.
Your piece really looks good there, and a real custom fit.

Plans are a bit like instructions really. When all else fails.......!
Nice work Ian, wish I could do that. Perhaps I should use plan.
Incidentally I particularly liked the doorstop.Jack the Lad.
