Plywood con?
I wanted to build my own wall cabinets instead of buying ready made melamine wall cabinets because I want that classic look with crown moulding around the top. So I went to a timber specialist, explained I was building cabinets and needed cabinet grade plywood, and he showed me the untreated plywood sheets in the thickness I wanted (18mm). It looked to be high quality so I paid the $350 for four sheets including delivery.
The delivery arrived and I noticed straight away that it wasn't the same ply I chose in the store. It was treated and had knots all over the face. I told the guy this isn't what I ordered at all and explained it is supposed to be cabinet quality untreated ply. He said he uses that stuff for kitchen cabinets all the time and that once I've filled in all the holes and knots with filler and painted it, it will look great. When he drove off I turned the pieces over and discovered that there are much larger holes on the back of the ply and the stamp on back says "E grade"! As in E - utility grade. I'm now panicking because I spent $350 on this ply and it looks awful.
Have I been completed conned, or is the guy right - is this awful E grade ply the cabinet grade ply I paid for and can it be transformed easily into beautiful cabinets? I'm feeling really disappointed that its not the nice ply I carefully selected and paid for in store. For the amount I paid I could have gotten ready-made cabinets.

The photos are a bit small sorry. The ply looks like a bulldozer has driven over it a few times with all the holes and track marks.

My receipt states "C ply untreated 2400x1200x18". The C ply at the store looked much better than the E grade that was delivered. The stamp on the ply that has been delivered states "Treated H3.2 - E" and then from what I can make out in Spanish it appears to say "product of Chile" followed by a warning about the treatment chemicals.
I told the delivery guy treated is unacceptable because I don't want to be breathing in arsenic as I cut it into cabinets but he said they don't use bad chemicals anymore in treatments and its fine for my health.
The piece on the top of the delivered pile was ok quality so it wasn't until I inspected under it that I saw how bad the other three were with those bulldozer like tracks running down the whole face.

We would call that construction grade plywood. It's common use would be the exterior walls (later covered with stucco or siding) or sub floor.
If I were building the cabinets, I would use the Melamine sheets and cover the exposed ends of the cabinets with 1/4 inch plywood. (Contact cement works great for this purpose.)

That is no doubt constrution ply and after you told the supplier that you were making cabinets it looks like he slipped you some crapp.
Make a fuss to get your money back,a big fuss if needed, then go somewhere else,I would not trust him again, that it is treated when you said thats not what you want also says it is construction grade.

I have 1/4 inch ply for the back of the wall cabinets. I didn't want to use melamine because I'll be brad nailing moulding to the crown and around the cabinet doors to create the French country look. Melamine looks too modern. I've purchased an antique white paint for the cabinets.

I already had to complain when the delivery hadn't arrived by the afternoon - turned out they'd forgotten to do it. Then when it arrived I complained that it was treated and he told me I was getting a "bargain" because I'd only paid for untreated. I explained to him that I especially spent $40 on delivery from his store for untreated ply because our local timber supplier, who delivers for free, doesn't deal with untreated timber. He just kept going on about the better deal I've gotten from treated. I don't think they're worth arguing with any further.
The ply looks like its had a rough ride on the trip from Chile and has a lot of nicks on the edge which makes it tricky to rip it using the guide fence on the circular saw.

I'd send it back as it does not meet the product description or sample. This is one of the requirements of consumer protection requirements and they are breaching consumer law. All products must be the same as the sample and must be as described. You are entitled to a replacement or a refund.

Ripped my friend
Sorry dude you have been ripped. That stuff you can get off ebay for about $35 a sheet. I paid $33 a sheet for some cheap Chillean 17mm formply from ebay not that long ago but I knew it wasn't the best of quality and it was what I expected for the price.
I would be taking it back and kicking up all hell till I got either what I asked for or my money back.

I know! That's what I was thinking when I inspected it after he had driven off. I've seen this roughed up stuff on auction websites for a really cheap price, except that those people advertised it as "seconds" for anyone who is building a kid's treehouse or chicken coup.
I couldn't believe the stamp said "Chile" on it. NZ is covered in pine plantations so all the Bunnings/Mitre10s etc here only stock timber with a NZ stamp on it. And this guy's charging the same price that Bunnings charges for the grade C stuff with nice clean edges. He said he uses this stuff for kitchen cabinets - for what, tree house kitchens?

I live in small town Manawatu so I don't think any of you will ever have to run into this guy!
NZ Consumer Law states we can demand a refund, but only if we return the goods to store and the consumer is responsible for the delivery cost of freight back to the store. So I'd lose less money if I just keep the crappy ply for a hen house.

Go back to the store and check the stamp on the back of the sheets you first inspected. If not the same grade you have a case.
Utility or E grade can be extremely variable due to the wide range of defects that can reduce the sheet to this grade.

I see that there not been any mention of the name of the business as yet and would prefer to maintain that status. For those that might not have read the forum rules please take a look at the second paragraph starting with to all members as link provided.

I think you've been clearly duped. Go to the store and make a scene if you don't get what you want. If they have social media website (i.e.: facebook etc) then post your complaint on the website. State to them that you would like the sheets redelivered and whilst they're at your place delivering the 'good' sheets, they can pick up the old.
