Chris, I will say at the outset that I haven't bought any of this stuff, but I have seen it and it appears to be good stuff... but please check it carefully before buying: Architectural Birch Plywood B/BB 12mmx2500x1220 | Trademaster

Just looking for quality plywood in Brisbane, I've been looking on the net and most of the web sites that pop up are terrible in terms of working out pricing and photos of the product with the except of Plyco's which is excellent but that's situated in Melboure I think. I'm thinking of getting Plyco's Pacific Marine ply for kitchen cabinet carcasses and queensland maple ply for the faces. I was just hoping to go local in case I don't get my order right and have to supliment my original order andsubsiquently have to pay shipping again. Thanks for any help.

Any particular reason you're using marine ply for the carcasses? Seems like a very expensive way to build something that won't be seen.

Hi elanjacobs, just thought it would be more dureable in regard to moisture in the kitchen and Plyco has pacific maple marine 19mm 2400 x1200 sheets for $180 a sheet which I didn't think sounded to bad. I'll admit though I've really got no idea.. what you you recommend?

wow thanks hurcorh! I just worked out how many square meters I would need and divided that by the square meterage of one sheet of ply which of course doesn't take into account waste and the likes. Wish I'd come here earlier. I'll redo my calculations

Industry standard for wet areas (kitchen, bathroom, laundry) is 16mm HMR white particle board, which Plyco has for $43/sheet White Melamine Particle Board | Plyco
I've lived in a few houses built in the late 80s - early 90s and all the cabinets were still intact. Obviously, if there's a leak/spill it needs to be mopped up; but day to day it's perfectly durable.

You're welcome just be sure to make your cut list as accurate as possible so that your cut list is accurate, too.

oh and also I was thinking of leaving the live edges of the ply if I like the look of it when I cut it rather than using tape and my understanding is I would get less pits from marine

Also, don't forget that you'll need to varnish the entire thing if you build out of ply, so factor the cost of that in on top of the 4x material cost over white melamine.
If you want the look and don't mind paying for it then that's your call

thanks elanjacobs, yeah factored that in. I figured since I'm doing it myself I can spend a bit more on materials. I'm planning on this kitchen lasting me out so going for durability.

yeah I don't mind the melamine but I just like the look of the ply and think it looks more premiun , also I've never been able to work out how to cut the melamine sheets without chipout.

Freshly sharpened blade set about 15mm above the board and a slow-ish even feed usually works pretty well. With cabinets, only one face is visible anyway, except for shelves, so a bit of chipping on the bottom isn't a huge deal.

BGB Marine came up on a search on facebook marketplace. Strange that for a seemingly affordable product, there's only a handful of reviews. Can anyone vouch for the quality of the marine-graded plywood sold by BGB?
