Default Is this a good pocket hole jig?

    Hi all,

Looking into getting a pocket hole jig as they look handy to have around. Found a cheap one on eBay that can be had for around $55, going by the photos it looks like good value, it seems similar to the kreg k4 but at a fraction of the price.

Has anyone used this type before? Is it worth getting or any other suggestions?

Here is an Amazon link to it.

    Thanks

Have a look at Hooked on Wood YouTube videos & web site. Dennis has does reviews & ranking of some pocket hole jigs as well as other tools from China.

I have the original Kreg. Long story, but original cost was about $140 but I got it for slightly less than $100. I have used it a few times. MEH.

Not having been in the shop for a long time due to the virus and the lock downs, I will say that "a good pocket hole jig" is an oxymoron. I mean the jig does what you expect but during assembly but even with the special clamps it is difficult to align pieces perfectly. I have developed a jig to make mortises with a router and cut tenons on the table saw. (Including angled tenons for splayed legs.)

Using a very old software development term, the pocket jig is useful for quick and dirty projects. Although I do love the Kreg screws with the Robertson drive.

It looks like it is reasonably built and gets good reviews from the 3 people who have reviewed it. Unless you are using it all day every day you should never wear it out and a few inaccuracies are not going to effect your joint once assembled.
I can't see a price on it, am I missing something?

They sell on eBay for about $55

The only negatives I can see so far are the measurments are in imperial and no dust extraction but I think both of those can be easily rectified.

Firstly, this doesn't help the OP but I have to disagree about assembly. Provided you firmly clamp the joining pieces then there shouldn't be any problems with assembly and alignment. I've not found this difficult and also many of the well know Youtube woodworkers, some of them are heavy Festool users

I've tried most of the pocket hole jig's including Kreg K4, K5, Armor tool and 2 Chinese models and all of them work fine and each one has its own advantages and disadvantages but all of them drill adequate pocket holes. So that jig in the OP looks fine. I can't speak on its durability.

Have to agree with barri. I don't use my Kreg unit a lot, but cramping your work properly, it works well.

    John
