First post-Workbench
Hello everyone,
This is my first post on the forum.
I recently moved house and SWMBO decided that the TV unit was not in keeping with the style of the new house, so it was destined for the tip.
Solid and in good working order, it sat in the garage awaiting the inevitable post move trip to the dump.

It was a pity to waste, and I really wanted a woodworking bench in the new place, so why not recycle?
I hit gumtree to find some timber to use for the top. Five spotted gum stair trees for $50 was the pick.

So I started milling them down on the old table saw to get all the bits I needed for the top.

I had some left over, so some legs were cut too.

I glued up sections of the top into slabs to put through the thicknesser. Unfortunately the finish was not that good as the the was a lot of snipe despite new blades. It was the grain direction of the timber. But it got them about right and and after a grad sand with 80 grit it smoothed them out.
I cut off the old legs, and added my new ones, a plywood under tray and some casters to swing it about the place.

Trimmed the lot off in Tasmanian oak, using dowels to secure into the top, then added an end vice. Trough half a dozen dog holes at the vice end (with probably more to come).

Then after sanding to 180 grit, I finished off with the beeswax, linseed oil and turpentine finish, which made the top pop.

I now have a workbench.

Good work - looks great.
Also, welcome to the forum.
Don't want to nit-pick, and hopefully it'll be fine, but you might have some issues with expansion/contraction of the top depending on how you've attached the edge/front boards. I did something similar when I first started woodworking and hadn't yet learned about how wood moves etc - all part of the journey .
Cheers,
Dom
