Just is
On occassion you can find a good deal with cheaper postage but generally postage costs double your purchase costs. It obviously depends on size, weight and carrier.
I recently ordered an item from the states which is available in Australia through limited distributers. The item price is about half of that in Australia, when you add postage it comes to roughly the same as here in Australia.
It would appear to me that the Australian retailers are basing their retail costs on what the average punter would have to pay to have it imported from the States. Given that the importer would most likely get cheaper postage rates into Australia, then they are collecting the original retailer profit on the item and a second bonus on postage. Of course there are likely to be taxes and the like to be paid, but it is unlikely to be double the original rrp.
Fortunately I found a US supplier with cheaper postage so it made the import much cheaper than buying the product locally. Sad that it couldn't be purchased locally but in this case it was possible to get a much better product for the same rate as the basic model in Australia.

Different Method
I import a lot of fittings from the US, get in touch with the seller, there are several ways they can ship to AUS, they don't always choose the cheaper option they often just choose the easiest.
Cheaper usually takes longer, and it pays to have insurance.
