Potential Woodworking Radio Doco-looking for people to speak to for research purposes
My name is Kate Walton and I’m the granddaughter of John A. Walton who wrote three woodworking textbooks including ‘Woodwork in Theory & Practice’. This year marks the 65 anniversary of that book first being published. I’m in the early negotiations with the ABC’s Radio National in the hope of making a radio documentary about my grandfather’s books, his life and legacy. I’m keen to speak with anyone who has used these books in their work; those who have learnt from them or even if you remember them from your school days. Maybe there is a particular woodworking project where you referred to his textbook? Or maybe were taught by my grandfather? Or, have memories of using this text book at school or at home? I’m keen to learn your thoughts, opinions, memories and experiences connected to these books.
I’m in writing a submission for Radio National and have a very tight deadline to get my submission in, it would be great if you could contact me by 11 June (the earlier the better, please). It’s best to email me via [email protected] or please personally message me via this website.
Kindly,
Kate Walton

We didn't have any woodwork books in the ww classes at my school (in Melbourne). Maybe the tech colleges did?

I've still got the one I got in high school 40 years ago, Imperial then.
Just recently I got the metric version at an op-shop, same as one above.
Good book.

Walton's "Woodwork in Theory and Practise".
Yes, I remember Mr Walton's book: I still have my copy and I refer to it often enough.
I started formal woodwork lessons at Hollywood High School in 1958 in Perth, WA. I was then13. Yes, I'm an old guy now.
Our text book was Walton's Woodwork in Theory and Practice. Our woodwork lessons comprised a half-day per week for three years. We learned to make a variety of mortise and tenon joints and dovetail joints plus how to plane squarely and to measure precisely. There were no power tools at school because there were none in homes, either. You were expected to take what you learned home with you to help dad.
We made some useful things at school. Among other things, I made a small bookcase which I never got to use because my mother used it and treasured it until she died, bless her.
Kate, I've replied to you via email. I hope I've helped.
Regards,
KevinB
