Best Practice for Jointing Kwila in this case...
Hi All
Im learning to manufacture Deck Chairs using 100% Kwila.
The main size material is 42 x 19 DS4 (dressed 4 sides).
Top and bottom end of frames have Cross members and currently I pre drill etc for 14g x 50mm csk galv batten screws to go in.
My concern is too much Drill chuck resistance can easily strip the hole in the end grain. Would it be a better idea to use a alternative connection process? A Dowel? A Threaded insert??
Thanks for your thoughts on this.
Chris

Are you using an ordinary drill to screw them in or a drill/driver, in which case adjusting the torque should alleviate the problem. If it's a bit hard to screw them in under torque, use some candle wax to lubricate them.

Not dowels! I have a high regard for threaded inserts though. I can't see any problem with your current connection method, but as suggested by KBs PensNmore above a bit of wax or running the screw through your hair (if you have any ) like my father used to do is a good move. I find relying on torque settings on driver drills pretty unreliable and in critical installations am much happier to drive the screw nearly all the way and then finish by hand.

I don't know what length of screws you are using. But for end grain fitting I usually prefer at least 50 mm or longer penetration with a deep thread like square drive screws appropriately predrilled.

Normally in end grain screws are not recommended. Dowels are ok but need an exterior glue to lock them in place
why not use two dowels, waterproof glue and on screw to pull it together.

Thanks Aldav
Good thoughts. Im new to 'Inserts' but come across them in my recycling biz and thought about them here.
No to hair (())
Re Torque settings on drills - I understand what your saying - Ive just gotta be "Careful"
Speed of manufacturing is the usual prompter and no less here in this case.
