Preparing Red mallee burl slab
I just got a rather nice red mallee slab with a view to making a typical clock/thermometer set for the wall.
It seems pretty hard and its certainly very dry. What is the best way to get the surface flat and free of saw marks- planing or sanding?
When finishing is it necessary to fill the little holes and cracks with resin or is it OK just to leave them and get the more rustic look?

re the little holes... you decide its your clock. there are no right or wrongs.
If you do fill them get a cheap version/brand of Arildite glue works a treat and cheaper to. I have it in a large redgum coffee table. Tonto

Clint,
Have a look at this thread - www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=4234&highlight=slab+thicknesser
It has a shop made router thicknesser on it that I copied to thickness burls. Works well.
