Question Presents ? What Presents ?

    Morning All

I need suggestions for a couple of presents ... the first is for friends who are having a baby early next year , they have the change table cot etc so maybe a keepsake box ? or similar ?

The second one will be a little harder I think ... my grandmother turns 100 in March next year and I would love to make something for her but my mind is a blank ( not unusual !! ) Anyone got any thoughts on what I could make ?

Any and all help appreciated ... thanks

    Steve

    Steve,

What Neil has made in this thread http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ight=christmas I am going to make for the inlaws - but the difference is i will insert in some of the hour locations the photo inserts. hence it is a combination of the two items he has made. Good idea for the gran as you can give her a combination clock-phot album

For the bub there are wooden toys if you do a search. Or something to hang on the wall that follows a nursery-rhyme would be popular.
    Cheers

What about a toy chest. It can be used for blankets n stuff until the nipper gets old enough to accumulate enough stuff to fill it up (which based on our 9week old is not that long at all!!).

I made one out of 19mm dressed pine boards, cheap and cheerful!

Steve, I remember reading somewhere that you can buy reprints of old newspapers, as they were printed originally. I can't find where I read it and a web search is not turning up much.

If you talked to The Age (Fairfax or whoever) and they could tell you, a copy of the Argus newspaper from the relevant day in March 1907 in a nice wooden display case could be a good present for your grandmother.

I make wooden photo albums that fit a 12 inch square scrapbook page, but they fuylly enclose the pages and protect them from the elements, and fold downflat for viewing. they are the ideal gift for births, weddings, golden wedding anniversaries etc.

am making one from silky oak and jacaranda for my parents 50th anniversary in september

The state library has them on microfilm and you can print off the front page or whatever. But they aren't like todays fron pages - more like the classifieds.

Boxes are always good presents - maybe you could do one with the front page polyurethaned to the inside of the lid for your grandmother.

    Here's a very different idea.

How about making a card, out of wood of course, with wooden hinges and the essential details carved into it, or carved and attached?

A lasting gift commemorating a very special occaision.

No, I haven't made one yet , but I reckon it would make a top gift.

    cheers

Thanks guys, all good ideas. I like the newspaper idea, will chase that up.

Keep the ideas coming, always interesting to see what comes up.
