    Question Best primer for mdf?

    I scrollsaw names and handpaint them with acrylic paint, but am having trouble with white on mdf.

    If they are solely white names I use water-based enamel in a spraygun, so no problem, in fact it's a beautiful finish. However, brushing on white paint on individual letters is so time consuming as the mdf
    tends to be difficult to cover.

    It's quite transparent with the first coat, and takes many coats to cover it, plus the finish is never that great with the brush. Is there a good primer I can use first?

    Dulux (and I'm sure many other paint companies) do primer in a spray can. I've used it a number of times and it gives a dense, even coat - 2 coats is usually plenty - and dries quickly.

    Just make sure you're in a very well ventilated area (outdoors and upwind if possible) as the fumes are quite strong.

    The use of MDF and Chipboard is extending the availability of real timber. If it was not available our dwindling stocks of good timber would be diminished even more quickly.

    There are a lot of things in life that are less than perfect,but upon consideration, it becomes evident they do have a place in the scheme of things. Hate is a very strong word.
    Auto paints work well on MDF.

    Thank you chambezio and rustynail. Wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm not sure why people hate MDF with a vengeance. Perhaps the toxicity? But then there are natural woods just as toxic.

    I have made many an item with MDF and natural woods and as you say, rustynail, they both have their place.

    If you are brushing, Dulux One Step primer might be worth a try. It is waterbased, dries quickly and sands easily.

    Default MDF Primer

    Oil Latex is the best primer for MDF.
