New Project - Flying Bed
With the birth of my third child only a couple of weeks away it is time to move my 21 month old into a bed in order to free up the cot. When my 3.5 year old moved from the cot to a bed (18 months ago) it was a seamless process, attributed (we think) to the cool Jeep bed we made him.

So what to build the daughter? Well the wife wants this big dolls house. She also wants it to look as simple as the one in the pic which means some complicated joinery .

i have made a start and completed the base, albeit wit a slight mod as the wife wanted the bed to sit a little off the floor. When I asked my son what he thought of Maddie's new bed he informed me it was boring and unless it was a flying bed then it will remain boring!!!! My first request of WWF is advice on how to make a bed fly

My real challenge is how to make the upper frame and make it look as simple as that in the pic. I have really no idea how this frame has been constructed. I have mocked up the A-Frame joint, albeit with one more screw then that visible in the diagram however thinking of building this at scale the same way seems impossible. (I am using 90x45 framing timber for the entire construction)

I am thinking there must be some hidden dowel joints that allow the whole frame to be fitted together and then the screws inserted to tighten it all up. Historically I have always found it very hard to get dowel joints to line up perfectly so am hesitant to go down this path.

The Result
After much consideration I have a result and it is not too bad.

I think that with a mattress and some other details it should look even better. As requested by the wife (who is an architect by the way) the form needed to be very simple (in appearance) and have very few screws visible
I ended up using some hidden dowels in the 22.5 and 45 degree connections. After I worked out how to make the appropriate dowel jigs it worked surprisingly well.

Top work on both beds, good inspiration as I have a similar problem ahead with a 20month old girl needing to make room for her baby brother due in March.
