Wanted: Project ideas for offcuts/scrap
Hello users,
I have collected (actually chosen not to dispose of) many small offcuts of cabinet timbers over the years and the pile has grown and grown. I always knew that they would come in handy sometime, and now that time has come, because the Missus has declared war on my stash. Please can someone give me some ideas what you have used this sort of stuff for, I need to justify its existence!
I thought of gluing similar-sized bits together to form laminates, but that isn't always practical. Please don't say FIREWOOD!

You could buy clock inserts from Jim Carroll and make them into clocks of various shapes and SWMBO could then use them for presents.
Think of the brownie points that could get you.Tom

If they're nicely contrasting woods start making inlay banding from them to use for decoration on your "bigger" projects.

The standard solution is to use the scraps to build a box for storing the scraps. Only problem is that if you use all of them, you won't have any scraps to put in the box.
Kidding aside, if you have a yen for woodturning, scraps are often large enough for pen blanks. Smaller scraps of various sizes are useful for segmented turning, which can be quite awesome. I don't know if anyone has done it, but for non-turning, segmented boxes (rectangular-ish) could be interesting, and would make nice gifts.

I bought a small lathe and began turning pens. More addictive than heroin (I hear). The small box idea offered by Watson above is sound. I have a jeweler in town that wants me to make some really small "one ring" boxes. These are only about 2-1/2" square and the idea is some bloke walks in determined to buy an engagement ring, despite his friends dour warnings, he may just want a fancy box to present it in. Of course, it won't make his predicament any easier, but the girl might like it. Just for the record, a nice piece of wood has to be really small to make me throw it away.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Same here, I have scraps of Huon pine so small that I struggle to imagine what to do with them, but I aint going to throw them out.
Ive also got a collection of old piano keys that are true Ebony and Ivory, I have no idea what to do with them, (insert Daffy Duck voice here) but they are all mine I tell you, all mine..
