Propogating Cuttings...........
I am interested in propogating some Huon Pine cuttings and want to know if there is anyone out there who knows anything about it.I have got Athol Pines to grow from a stick before many years ago by just ramming a stick in the ground and they all took so hopefully there is a more delicate way to do the Huon Pines. If successful you all could have you own little Huon Pine in your home.

Tasman,
Firstly find out when the best time of year for doing this, most plants have a season where they spend their energy growing leaves fruit etc, and an alternative time where root growth is best.
Soil should be warm (good luck on this one).
I regret typing the next bit before I've even done it, but you need to use a rooting powder on the base of each "stick" to promote root growth.
Check with forestry and local nursery about the growing cycle for huon's.
hope this helps,

Information on Propagating Huon Pine
Tasman,
Give Lee or one of the others in the Forestry Tasmania office at Strahan a call, they have been having success with growing Huon Pine for planting out on the Teepookana Plateau after harvesting..........but it may have been from seed.

In "Australian Native Plants" by John Wrigley, the propagation of the Huon Pine is as follows " From cuttings and no doubt seed when available" so go a head a give the old stick it into some soil and try method. Nothing to lose and plenty to gain if it works! Good luck.

Should be nice looking trees by now.
You can buy the seeds on a popular auction site.

Doesn't Huon pine take thousands of years to grow to any appreciable size? I had a look at one of the small pieces i've got laying around for a special project one day and it had several hundred growth rings in a hands width.
Not sure how big those trees would be ten years down the track, a nice idea for future generations to enjoy though.
Also, I was confussed by the dates when i read something about it being spring, someone has been searching the archives.
