Public workshop in Melbourne?
Is there a public workshop/school in Melbourne allowing ad hoc access to machines and tools for fine furniture making?
I realise high schools/TAFE colleges often allow after hours access, but I'm looking for somewhere that has instructors/TAs available for people working on their own projects rather than set courses.

Tracey, your post may have gone unanswered 'til now because what you are seeking is rather unusual. However, I have a suggestion, but this may not be exactly what you have in mind.
The Melbourne Woodworking and Furniture Makers Club (MWFM), located in Box Hill is a "not for profit" organisation that offers mentoring tutorials on a fee basis.
Although not a cheap program, (one needs to join, pay annual fees, and enroll in the various classes) it does provide a fairly well equipped workshop in addition to the tutorials. Their introductory courses require that you design and build a project of your choice. Skilled and formally trained personnel are on hand to guide you each step of the way, providing the level of assistance your skill level dictates.
The person to contact is Sue Laws. Her email address is [email protected].

You should find that most high schools that offer a "woodwork course" will in fact allow you to make whatever you want, rather than follow a particular project. Just ring and check. I haven't done one in Melb, but used to go to one in Canberra, and we could make whatever we wanted.
Otherwise, there is a shop in Williamstown called "Just Woodworking" which provides a workshop for rent. You just go in with your own timber and use their machines. I've never used it though, so can't comment on how good it is. Plus you dont say where you are so dont know if willi is convenient.

I think you mean "get woodworking" ?

Yeah that's the one! "Get Woodworking".
(obviously, you can see how often I go there!)
I think they do classes as well as just rent the workshop. No idea of prices.
