Default Where to purchase bench dogs for MFT

    Hi guys

I've bought a parf mft guide from marketplace on here so am looking to buy some MFT bench dogs and other accessories.

I wasn't expecting the cost of the UJK stuff to be quite so high and obviously festool is expensive.

Is there any online supplier you would recommend? Looking for small bench dogs and some tall ones to butt the rail of tracksaw up against.

    Thanks, Tony

    Hi Tony,
    I got mine from ausdogs.com.au

There pretty good quality without breaking the bank.

    Cheers, Peter

Good bench dogs aren't cheap, but are worth buying.

A few years ago, I bought some of the small, and large ones from Lee Valley - exactly these, in fact: Stainless-Steel Parf Dogs by Veritas - Lee Valley Tools

They are stainless steel, and are as good as new still today. My only wish was that I had bought more at the time.

I have some Festool ones and some cheap Kreg ones that are available at most tool shops.

I typically reach for the Kreg first, they store nicely in my deadman

aminster do the parf dogs in various sizes. They're not that expensive, and they do international delivery at reasonable prices (sometimes free over a certain value).

The guide pups are the most useful - UJK 12mm Guide Dogs (Pair) | Axminster Tools International

UJK 50mm Guide Dogs (Pair) | Axminster Tools International

Catalogue page - Axminster Tools Catalogue 2020/21 by Axminster Tools - Issuu

Make sure you use the Aus $ and Aus delivery for prices as it''ll deduct the UK's 20% VAT from the prices.

Read somewhere that blacksmith hand made bench dogs are supposed to be more durable. The modern designs are very nice and have interesting features as well

+1 for ausdogs. They’re basic but affordable and work.
Also +1 for axminster. I ordered a reamer and a few other hard to find bits. $10 postage and arrived in less than 2 weeks from ordering.

    Hi Tony,
You'd have to decide whether you want stainless steel (for durability) or aluminium (just in case you misplace one and cross it with your track saw).

To support the rail, the rail dogs might be a better option as they don't get in the way of the tracksaw motor housing or batteries unlike some of the taller tall dogs. Also, one pair of rail dogs may be better than ending up with a range of sizes.

To butt the timber or sheet against, I prefer the short dogs with a threaded through-hole. This can improve accuracy and the dogs can also be used to connect jigs to your table.

I normally use a Festool Guide Rail Square for cutting sheets square.

    Regards,
    Tij

A lot less convenient. I have used standard flat bar clamps it was tricky getting the other part under the bench but it worked too.
I didn't mention earlier but I believe hand forging work hardens the metal making those bar clamps very tough. Occasionally they can be found reasonably priced.
Yes stainless steel is tough as well.

    Hi guys

Thanks for all the input. I've gone ahead and placed an order with Axminister. When I had a good look at the prices it wasn't that much more expensive than some of the generic options.

    Thanks again

Axminster use DHL express. I purchased some "Key Blades & Fixings" brand saw blades for my track saw, posted from the UK via DHL express and they were delivered to my Door in SA on a sunday in a total of 4 days. It's quicker than interstate Auspost!

A few days ago I purchased some items from Axminster and DHL emailed yesterday to say they are due on the 10th of September, not too shabby.

    Hi Tony

I am a great believer in wooden bench dogs - this is a woodwork forum! Just get a small square, or rectangle or triangle - all work well - of wood or plywood of an appropriate thickness, drill a hole in the middle and glue in a bit of dowel. QED.

I absolutely hate metal bench dogs - they have an irresistable magnetic ability to attract and chip chisel and plane blades when used by a clumsy sod like me.
