Purple wood??
I was given a bit of wood that when worked is purple, but goes dark brown after that.
this timber is very hard and was told that it came from outback SA.
was also told that this bit of timber only grows in a small area somthing like 10 square Km's and is very hard to get (dont know if this is true) and is up beyond Peterburough (spelling??)
was also told its from private property ( bloke who gave it to me knows the bloke who has the property)
any Ideas

Ian
It could be Purple Heart
see http://www.ockenden-timber.sagesite....urpleheart.htm
Do a search on the BB some others here have made some stuff out of it.
The only problem is that it is imported from South America, maybe some guy has planted some trees in outback SA????

Acacia Peuce (Waddy Wood) is known to grow around Birdsville not far from the road to Big Red and in the NT. It is quite rare but has a purple/brown colour.
It is extremely hard, quite often causing sparks to fly when it is cut with a power saw such as a bandsaw.
I guess it is possible there are some in outback SA.

It's also really heavy. His small "log" of about 600mm by 150mm diameter would have had to weigh 15kg I'd reckon.
Very dark chocolate brown in colour too.

Some time ago, our TAFE instructor was describing Purple Gidgee, and it sounded very much like your timber.

Could be Dead Finish, goes brown after a while & is bloody hard, not sure that it grows in SA though.
