Default Where to get small quantities of timber?

    Hi All,

I am looking at doing some inlays in cutting boards etc and am looking for something light as a contrast to the main wood, red gum.

The question is a) what would be a good contrasting wood to use and b) where can I buy it from in very small quantities? Prefer SE Melbourne. Brittons would be the closest that I can think of, but I also think that the quantities that I am after would be too small even for them.

This is what I am thinking of.

    Default This could help?

It all really depends on what you're actaully looking for? I have some unused floorboards kicking around in the shed. There is spotted gum, grey box (bloody hard timber that), im finishing a sydney blue gum floor on sat that hopefully will have some leftovers so will nab that too. There maybe some others. If that sounds like something you could use shoot me a pm.

    Cheers

    Hi cava.

You could try some cabinet makers or furniture restorers (if there are any in you area) for light colored off cuts.

I was in the same situation as you and went to a local antique furniture restorer, he was able to find some light colored timber in his pile for me.

It depends on the length you need.

If worse come to worse, I've used some lighter bits of Tassie Oak from the green shed to contrast with Redgum before, its probably not light enough though.

I can probably get you some off cuts from work, let me know what you're after and I'll see what we have lying around.

At a pinch plain ol' tassie oak or vic ash from the dreaded green shed would also be a good contrast to red gum.

Why don't you ask other Melbourne forum members if they have some off-cuts of Vic Ash or similar? If you were here in Brisbane, I would give you some that I have lying around, gratis.

Do you know of The Woodsmith in Lusher Rd, Croydon?

He stocks primarily wood-turning blanks, of everything from common thru to exotics. But you should be able to buy a few different blanks of asstd. species/colours and slice them up judiciously for use in several different projects.

May not be what you want now, perhaps a tad exxy, but who knows what you'll want a bit further down the line with a bit of practice under your belt?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Hi All, thanks for the responses, suggestions and offers.

Vic/Tas Ash is probably not going to do it for me, as I need/want something a bit more pronounced. I have contacted some of the members here, and will see how it goes.

However, just for the record, what I do appreciate is the offers from the members on this site - it is appreciated.
