Default A question of design: KS bed

I'll have another go.

I'm about to start this KS bed.

I have some questions about the head/tailboard that I would like opinions on:
Would you have the slats one-piece (I have long enough timber to do this), and make the two vertical 'stiffeners' in two parts? That is, two curved matching pieces, with spacer blocks, with the slats M&T'd into the end posts. Less work, methinks. Or..
Have the two 'mid posts' as solid pieces, and M&T the slats into these?

If you did this, how would you join the posts to the rail below? Sliding dovetail? Dowels?
Do you think that I need a jig to keep the shape during assembly?
In what sequence would you assemble the ends?

Regards

Den

Design for bed in Australian Wood review number 49. Excellent description of how to make the headboard.

Borrow a copy of the bed book by Jeff Miller, it's a very good resource

Catalogue Record for Chatswood (Sydney suburb) Library

What I would do is have the slats pass over the centre supports. I'm not sure that I would M&T them into the posts though as it will be very difficult to get all the mortices to be perfectly in line. I think Fine Woodworking covered a bed similar to what you're looking at some years ago. You may want to try a search.
I've made two sleigh beds, in one the curved panel is made of two sheets of ¼in ply glued together, the other curved panel is made of three 19mm edge jointed boards which are housed in a slot routed into each post.

Thanks Ian - I'm worried about that too. I will get that book out on loan.

Cheers
