Default a question about fence palings

Not sure where to post this so I thought here is as good as anywhere.

Someone once told me that if you only paint a paling fence on one side that it actually
makes the fence palings deteriorate quicker than normal.
Supposedly something to do with moisture when it rains not being able to dry out as quickly.

Is this true or have I heard wrong

I'd appreciate any info on this as I need to do some fencing soon

    Thanks a lot

    Frank

IMO it will make them curl if you don't do both sides.

I agree with nrb. Do both sides or not at all.

Can I put my hand up as another to agree with the consensus.
If you want to "decorate your side only make up some panels and secure them to the fence. (Might keep the wife happy for a little while at least)
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

    Good Morning Frank

I do not think it makes any difference. If you paint both sides you cannot paint into the overlap so there is always this gap where moisture/vapour can enter and exit the wood, so you are not really protecting both sides.

All of our fences are 20+ year old paling fences and have weathered to a lovely silver/grey colour - we let mother nature be our colour chart - except one which was painted with maddison oil many years ago. I cannot detect any difference in the weathering or movement of those pailings.

Why create work? Once painted, it will later require repainting .... and repainting ....
