quick release on vice
Im restoring the wokbench I got from the school and have two problems
The quick release on one of the vices slips when you try to tighten the vice rendering the vice usless.
The release on the vice on the other side has been taken out and that one works fine.
Is this somthing that can be ajusted or will there be a worn part somewhere.?
should i just take out the release same as on the other side?.
My other problem is removing the old masonite on top,
Ive got rid of most of it using a tungson scraper( with old blade) but it apears to have been put on with epoxy.
got big lumps of the stuff all over the top.
I would use the belt sander except for the hidden nails that keep appearing they'll just chew the belts up.
Ive tried an old chisel but the timber underneath is ripping away with it.
any sugestions?
Thanks

If you can get to the point where the epoxy is mostly exposed, and you can access a hot heatgun, you sould be able to soften the epoxy enough to get a scraper blade under it and lift it. Obce it is not gumming the works, you should be able to pull nails/staples with a pair of chippies pincers.
Otherwise get some coarse (40 or rougher) blue belts and work over the lumps with that, it should cope reasonably with the wire in the nails/staples. If you go this way you will generate heat rapidly. This will soften the epoxy and allow it to clog the belts. To avoid, move from dollup to dollup every few seconds to avoid heating the epoxy to the point where it starts to soften. Seems like there are enough to you occupied while not returning to a particular one for a couple of minutes to allow cooling time.
I suspect that the QR on the vice is probably worn beyond repair. Only other possibility I anticipate is that it might have a big load of dust in the mechanism so that it does not engage fully. Strip it down and clean/examine to verify, and then decide on the most appropriate path.

Having worked in School shops for most of my life, I am aware of worn out quick releases... They were usually bronze and wore rather easily, some ould slip as yours seems to be doinbg. I found that taking a radiator hose clamp (the screw type) and surround the two mating sides of the half nuts of the quick release mechanism secure them into a full nut. (you will loose the quick release part of the vise but it will function as a positive pressure vise.)
Also those half nuts are still available from the manufacturer, what is the brand?

HI
Slight thread jack, I have a new ( bought at last years working with wood show in perth from carbatec) bench vise, after having recently moved into the new house the vise now slips, I know the quick release bar thingy that runs back under the vice bent during the move (Don't ask) but i've straightened it out pretty well.
Any other ideas what might be the problem. by the way it probably doesn't matter but the benchtop inc vise was transported upside down
Thanks
Matt

Sorry Hickory and Watson, was at work yesterday
The brand is DAWN 175
The two mating sides of the half nuts Aha.....
I have not the slightest idea what your talking about.
could you try to put this in girl talk,
(like "the small thingys that hold the long whasit"
Im ok with the radiator clamp thing.
Is the long bar on the release supposed to have a twist at the front end?
Ive taken the bar out, now the clamp wont wind up at all.
Should i take the whole vise off the bench and strip the whole thing down?

There's a long screw thingo that goes around and around as you turn the handlle.
On that should be a half nut arrangement...just like a nut cut in half.
This half nut should also be attached to the quick release doo hickey, whose job it is to spread the half nuts apart, so that the jaws don't have to rely on the log screw thingo to move in and out....hence quick release.
Does that make sense out of the pile of bits you have???Last edited by watson; 9th January 2008 at 02:29 PM. Reason: uzbekestan spell checker

In a word, no
There is long screw thingy that winds through a big square block with theads cut on half, and a latch thingy on the bottom, that i think is supposed to move a long bar.
The bar is on the bottom of vice and held in place with a screwed on plate.
The bar has a twist at the front that might, or might not be the problem. ok we can drop the thingy thing.
thanks watson, i think you and hickory might have a different sort of vice in mind.

The big square block with threads cut on half is the half nut.
You might be onto the problem with the twisted bar though.

I bought a new quick release from Carbatec and the quick release mechanism wasn't working. Bought it back there and the salesman got out a pair of pliers and twisted something into position, now it works fine and I use it constantly. Might be a pain to try and fix it but a quick release is valuable on any vice.

Theres only one of these very big square half nuts, with a latch on the bottom, this looks ok but the bar and the spindle I think are buddered.
The bar thing is supposed to engage/disengage the latch and push the nut up and out of the way of the spindle
also if i remove the spindle its wealy worn down in the centre and is probably not engageing the nut properly.
one for the scrap heap?
The vice spindle on the one on the other side of the bench is the same brand but the release has been removed and the spindle seems to run through a whole very big square nut this one works fine but without the release.
Sorry guys, a nut to me is one of those somewhat smaller hexagonal thingys

Google of [dawn 175 vise OR vice] brought this hit:
https://www.woodworkforums.com/f13/dawn-225-vice-information-51600-post535213
Worth a look, but doesn't seem encouraging for spare parts. Best of luck.
BTW, when you re-attach the sacrificial masonite, use small nails or staples but no glue. (Probably obvious, of course)
