So far, so good. As far as finish goes I would consider using shellac. If you want to colour it then use blond shellac and mix in a wood dye into the shellac. Pine is, as you probably are well aware, prone to go blotchy when stained. and this avoids that problem. Application with a fine brush and a weak mix would be the way to go.

I've used feast watsons products (from bunnies) for staining pine and i am happy with the results. I suggest you use the sealer though, because if you don't you will get the blotchy results as mentioned

Two points to consider.

One --It might be a long way for Hickory to travel to Bunnings

Two --- Shellac is a sealer as much as it is a finish.. What I suggested was to put the wood dye (I use Feast Watson dye) into the shellac. Just doing things the easy way.

As long as you are talking about putting a coat on without dye first then I see your point about the shellac.

It looks very very nice Hickory.
However the inherent weakness in the ends of the hearts may mean the ends can break if the centre rod recieves a high lateral loading (like a bump)

Structurally I think the piece will be fine. Weak points will be at the short grain of the heart and the feet. I doubt this will be an issue as long as it's used for quilts and not to stand on to change lightbulbs.

As for finish. I just love shellac. I think this a 1lb mix to seal it. Followed by a 4-5lb finish of orange shellac with maybe an extra bit of dye and it'll look great. (Will be nice and golden without dye but still quite light.) Depends on the look your after and the other furniture in the room.

To me the top seems overbearing(top heavy), maybe if you had the heart shape replicated at the bottom to balance the look?

Thanks, I made a bunch of these several years ago, sold a few and gifted the rest. Ever sinse, I had the idea and just got my round to it in gear.

Used the same pattern for the Heart top and Heart shaped base. The legs are also from the same pattern so it is the same width at bottom and top (the camera angle lies) the thickness is 1 1/2" so I don't think there is a strength problem.

Also have a plan in my skull for a wall unit to display several quilts. Will have to get it on paper and into reality soon.

Am I the only one who saw the thread title and saw "Guilt rack prototype" and started wondering what Hickory was doing in the basement? Just me? thought it might be.

Going by the size of that key, that's a BIG lock you have on that trap-door!
