    Default Quote on french doors.

I've been asked to make up two pairs of french doors like these ones. not so much glass. Think he wants only 4 panes per door.

I know....... I'll work out a figure myself. But, I'm still curious as too how much others would charge.

Just say pine with a stain to look like cedar or what have you. Parliament hinges etc. Got 6 months

Hoping for a ball park figure uno. Thanks.

I got a couple of sets for a lady from a commercial manufacturer about 7 years ago and they cost in the ball park of 600 dollars a set. They were made from one of the cedars imported from png.

Don't forget that this was around 7 years ago, and they were machine made and unfinished. I really should have mentioned that.

I would really be looking at around $850/1000 for a finished set. At this time, that price wouldn't be excessive for a set of stained finished doors. It would also depend on the timber used.

I would send the size to a joinery and get an estimate for an unfinished set, that will give you a better idea on the price. It might be a real shock to the system.

Yes, well I work at a joinery, so I kinda feel I should know myself......but the boss always changes the topic pretty quick everytime I ask him what he's getting for it.

I'll ring around Monday. Try and throw the styles and rails through the machines when he's away for the day.

Thanks for the Chin wag Robert.

Ring him up and bung on an accent:

"Hurro. I needy plice ona suma door flom honourable gentleman prease? " Or get a mate to ring. I'd do it for you.

I know you'd like to hear a big price, but a builder I used to work for used them often, and I got a quote from them (along with others), for my place, just for interests sake (I'm making mine myself).
Their prices are right and they do good work.
They're usually pretty busy, with a long lead time, but of course that won't matter to you. If they're flat out, then they may beef up the quote. They weren't always the cheapest, and my boss didn't always use them, but they gave the best price for me. Cheaper than Stegbar at the time.

Thanks John. I'll give stockwells a call.

Working out quotes always ties me in knots. And I won't be able to use the bosses machines. And he won't like the idea of me doing joinery sort of work outside of his shop.

I'd have to find the timber as well, to thickness down to 35mm. Straight stuff for the styles. Which I can do at home. But, then I don't have a tenoning, or moulding machine. Biggist bother is working out a way of cope the sash into the rails by hand somehow. Think I know how, but its a lot easier with the machine. I won't be buying router bits especially.

Then they probably expect me to hang the doors, and probably do archatraves etc....paint them....etc

uno, usual fear. End up quoting less than what I deserve after all the time spent.

The misses is pushing for it.....' gota do it Jake !....2 grand ! ' anyhow, my problem. You don't want to hear all that.

Two grand may be a little pricey, but it's a while since I've looked into it. $600 sounds too cheap. I know you could get a bog standard, off the shelf, eight light colonial from doors plus for probably a couple of hundred per leaf, with toughened glass, but for something tailor made with panels in the bottom I'd guess about five hundred per leaf, plus a bit for the jamb and architraves. Maybe more though.
If the opening was ready to go, a decent chippie should be able to install the jamb, hang the doors, install locks and furniture, and install the architraves in under a day. So that's another $400 odd. So at a guess:
    Doors 2x $500 = $1,000
    Labour, instalation = $400 > $500
Jamb material & architraves = extra
Locks, hinges, hardware, flashings = extra (can be very expen$ive)
    Painting = extra

    Edit:

He sounds like a mongrel dog to me. As long as you’re not pinching any of his clients, then he ought to be happy about you making a bit of loose change in your own time.
    It’s called ‘networking’.
If and when you go out on your own, you may be too busy to look after someone, and I wouldn’t be referring them back to him if he’s a bum. You ought to be helping each other out in the game. Especially if it’s no skin off your nose to do so.

    Jake,
it's far better to quote high and miss out on a job and not make any money than to quote low, do the work and not make any money.

Recently I bought 2 sets ( thats 4 doors) of similiar style for $980. They were made from an unknown rainforest timber with standard window glass.

The surrounding jambs, heads and sills would have added another 180 per door set, and installation would have been about 200 a set. I dont think the installation included locks and bolts though.

My doors sets were 1000 wide x 2050 high (which was a standard size) - to0 make up a custom size would have added another $80 per set.

I think the supplier was Eagle joiners in Brisbane.
