    Default In the rabbit house

    G'day all,

I am about to build a rabbit house for some kids. It will have a gable roof with half of the roof able to swing out of the way. It will have a pine frame with some exterior plywood as cladding. Half of the roof needs to swing out of the way to feed etc the rabbit. Question is what do you use to prevent rain from getting into the roof where the roof will swing open? Could you use plastic, sheet metal ? Any thoughts welcome

Cut a strip from an old tyre tube or bike tube. Staple to each side.

Often wondered what to do with the kids, but never thought of putting them in a rabbit house
If we learn by our mistakes, I have had a wonderful education!

    Hi Tiger,

We have a rabbit for our kids, and a bought pen (needed it in a hurry) - but if I were to build one, I would make it so that it had a gable-roofed little hutch, up off the ground by about 600mm, with a timber-framed run off that, with handles and wheels for ease of shifting it around the lawn. I'd make the roof fixed, and have a door that accesses the space under the little house (*swinging in), allowing you to drop the floor of the house for cleaning - straight into a kid's wheelbarrow?

You'd also need a ramp, of course so the rabbit doesn't have to become an acrobat to get in! Also, the little house should have a door on it, and the door underneath should *swing in to close off the rest of the run, so that you can then block the rabbit in the run while cleaning - making it a one person job, rather than 'one to do the smelly bit, and one to hold the rabbit'! Make the floor out of something that can handle washing each time, too - they are stupid animals, really - soiling their home! Our pig has a hutch, and she keeps such a clean house - adding to her bedding, even! Rabbits have no clue.

    Cheers,

    Jill
