Search the forum (Search button is the 3rd from the right on top of every forum page). You will se that many finishes are food and kid safe. How about starting with the forum sponsors trad wax product?
    ie http://www.ubeaut.com.au/trad.html

I use it on all my cutting boards, utensils etc and just cos' it's a damn fine wax and brings out the best on most timber.

Why do you want to use wood sealant on a toddler?

You could always colour them with food dye then seal them with shellac.
Shellac is also used as a foodstuff so it should be safe

And if you use a dark coloured timber, even if you suffered a little leakage . . . . . . Nah . . . maybe we won't go there.
